Controlled Process for Deformation Correction of Workpieces in CNC Machining

Workpiece deformation correction and control in CNC machining is a core process that directly determines the final dimensional accuracy and assembly performance of precision parts. It addresses the elastic and plastic displacement generated during material removal, clamping and thermal expansion, rather than relying entirely on post-processing manual repair to compensate for errors. Proper process design minimizes deformation risks from the very beginning of the workflow, ensuring consistent part quality across batch production.

Pre-Machining Residual Stress Regulation

Before the first cutting tool touches the workpiece blank, targeted stress adjustment measures can reduce most potential deformation sources in subsequent machining stages.

Blank Aging and Stress Relief

Arrange a natural or artificial aging process for the raw material blank, so that the internal residual stress generated during forging, casting or rolling can be fully released and redistributed before formal cutting. This step avoids the problem that after a large amount of material is removed, the original stress balance inside the blank is broken, causing the part to warp or twist unpredictably during or after machining. For parts with strict precision requirements, multiple rounds of stress relief can be inserted between different machining stages, rather than only performing one treatment at the very beginning.

Pre-Machining Stress Mapping

Use non-destructive testing methods to scan the stress distribution state of the blank, and mark the areas with obvious stress concentration. Based on these data, adjust the positioning reference and clamping direction of the workpiece, so that the material removal sequence can balance the stress release speed in different areas. This pre-machining assessment avoids the blind cutting mode that treats all blanks as ideal stress-free bodies, and greatly reduces the randomness of deformation.

Cutting Process Deformation Suppression

Reasonable arrangement of cutting sequence, tool path and parameter matching can effectively control the elastic deformation of the workpiece-fixture-tool system during the cutting process.

Layered Allowance Removal Strategy

Divide the total machining allowance into multiple layers for roughing, semi-finishing and finishing, instead of removing a large amount of material at one time. Each cutting layer only removes a small and uniform thickness of material, so that the stress release of the workpiece can be carried out gradually and stably, without causing large sudden deformation. Leave a reasonable and uniform finishing allowance after semi-finishing, which can offset the tiny deformation generated after the previous process, and will not produce new large stress due to excessive cutting force.

Tool Path Adaptive Correction

Modify the original nominal tool path according to the predicted deformation trend of the workpiece, rather than directly executing the path generated by the CAM system. When the thin-walled area of the workpiece is expected to elastically deform towards the tool under cutting force, the tool path is appropriately offset outward by a small calculated value, to compensate for the actual displacement of the material during cutting. This method ensures that the final contour of the part still meets the dimensional tolerance requirements, even if the workpiece produces a certain predictable elastic deformation.

On-Machine Inspection and Post-Process Correction

Introduce real-time detection and dynamic correction links between machining processes, to eliminate the accumulated deformation errors that cannot be completely avoided in the previous stages.

Intermediate On-Machine Measurement

Integrate the high-precision measurement process into the CNC machine tool, and complete the dimensional detection of the workpiece after each key machining stage without unloading the part. This method avoids the secondary clamping error caused by moving the workpiece to an external coordinate measuring machine, and can obtain the actual deformation data of the part immediately after cutting. According to these measured data, the next machining step can be adjusted in time to correct the deformation deviation that has occurred.

Low Stress Correction and Stabilization

After the main machining process is completed, use a non-violent low-stress correction method for the tiny residual deformation of the part, instead of applying strong external force to force the shape to be corrected. Combined with local temperature control or micro plastic treatment, the micro deformation can be adjusted to the qualified range, and no new residual stress will be introduced inside the part. This final stabilization treatment ensures that the dimensional accuracy of the finished part will not continue to change after leaving the machine tool.
